I live in a retirement home with 80 and 90 years olds.
We have common meals together in a dining room around round tables.
These dark days here in the US have an even more depressive feeling that goes along with the expected pains of bodies gradually breaking down.
All of us have had meaningful careers serving others. All of us have deep values of peace, justice, and care of others.
It is hard daily to have hope for this old body and mind.
When we add to our milieu the reality of our President’s decline (one that many of us know!), and his insatiable desire for vengeance and wild pronouncements, it is behavior we recognize. We also know where it goes.
Keeping hope for our beloved country is hard.
Those of us who can still think clearly, tend to internalize their thoughts until they lead to hopefulness. It’s not uncommon to hear: “I’m ready to die.”
As a Christian, I despair for that level of depression. I am called by God to remember that He is in this world and is “tending His sheep”. I don’t believe in a God who swoops in and saves the world. God gave us this world to tend. It is ours. It is our responsibility!
I dare to say that Trump’s warriors and his unhinged behavior are evil!
But God is still here waiting to comfort and empower us. I take courage from that knowledge.
To me it means that I am not alone in my feelings. I can pray for the good people in the Congress and know that my prayers may be what is holding them up in these dark times. Oh, also, I write to them almost daily.
“Come to me all you who are weary, And I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28.
For us, in this retirement home, we can’t march and protest.
But we can be faithful to our core values and let them guide our actions.
